Are our days numbered?

Time is a funny thing right? It seems to go so quick at times and at other times so slow….

As we prepare to enter another new year how has 2021 gone for you? Maybe it’s dragged or maybe it’s flown by or maybe a combination of both?

Here’s the thing, the key word I sense for most of us as we enter this new year is the word UNCERTAINTY….

Uncertainty is like rocket fuel for worry and anxiety, do you know research says job uncertainty is more harmful to your health than actual job loss?!

Well here’s something CERTAIN…time passes….we can’t stop it, slow it or hold it back…

But we can do something with it…

Over the Christmas break I’ve been reading a great book called ‘Do it for a day’ by Mark Batterson and in that book he says this….

Time is measured in minutes but life is measured in moments’

Are our days numbered? Yes in one sense but in another sense we get to number them!

David writes in Psalm 90 v. 12,

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

How do we do this? How do we take control of numbering our days so we measure in moments rather than minutes?

I love the old story of a survey taken of over 95 year olds who were asked what they would do differently with their lives if they could.

The top 3 answers are so good…

They said, ‘I’d reflect more….’

They said ‘I’d risk more…’

They said, ‘I’d do more that lives on beyond my life….’

Wow! This is wisdom and maybe this could provide a framework for each of us as we enter  another new year.

Are we going to merely let the minutes measure our lives or will we number our days so our lives are measured more by moments than minutes….more by accumulating experiences than accumulating possessions…more by genuine connections with people than shallow clicks and likes on social media….

My Uncle Alan died several years ago. He was raised an orphan, in and out of care, who become a self made wealthy man then later in life become a Jesus follower.

I remember him once saying to me, ‘I wish I’d met Jesus earlier in my life, look at what I could have done for Him.’

I remember saying to him, ‘it’s not the length of your furrow it’s the depth that counts!’

Whatever your age, or stage, all of our days are numbered but we get to choose how to number them!

Let’s reflect more….Socrates famously said, ‘the unexamined life is not worth living,’

Let’s risk more….someone else said, ‘the unlived life is not worth examining!’

What does risk look like for you in 2022? Relationally? Professionally? Spiritually?

Let’s all do more that lives on beyond us…moments, connections, experiences, service, giving, investments in other peoples lives…

Listen to these verses again but from the Passion Translation and ask God to seal these within your heart as together we enter another new year….a year that can be measured in minutes or it can be measured in moments…..the choice is ours….

Help us to remember that our days are numbered, and help us to interpret our lives correctly. Set your wisdom deeply in our hearts so that we may accept your correction.
